Vibrio cholera causes acute infection presenting as watery diarrhea. It shows rapid, darting (“shooting star”) motility due to its single polar flagellum
In direct examination of feces distinguishing vibrios from other motile, straight or curved rods is difficult & culture should be performed for confirmation. This motility is highly characteristic and provides a quick presumptive clue toward cholera also helps differentiate true motility from Brownian movement.
