About This Test
The Stool for Faecal Fat test using Sudan stain is a qualitative test that detects the presence of excess fat (steatorrhea) in stool.
Sudan III or Sudan IV is used to stain fat droplets orange-red, allowing microscopic visualization. It is a rapid screening test for fat malabsorption. Increased faecal fat indicates failure to digest or absorb fats. Major Causes of Increased Faecal Fat are due to Pancreatic Causes (Fat digestion defect) , Biliary Causes (Lack of bile salts), Intestinal Causes (Fat absorption defect)and Post-surgical .
