About This Test
The Urinary Urobilinogen Test detects the amount of urobilinogen present in urine.
Urobilinogen is formed in the intestine from bilirubin breakdown and a small amount is normally reabsorbed into the blood and excreted via urine. The test is included in urine routine (dipstick) or performed separately using Ehrlich’s reagent. This test differentiates types of jaundice i.e, Hemolytic, Hepatic or Obstructive. It is an early indicator of liver damage. It also helps to detect hemolysis.
