About This Test
The 17-OHP test measures the level of 17-hydroxyprogesterone, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and gonads (ovaries/testes). It helps evaluate adrenal gland function and diagnose congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) — a genetic disorder affecting cortisol production.
Congenital 21-hydroxylase deficiency is the most common variety of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) where 17 OHP is secreted in abundant excess.
CAH is a collection of inherited conditions with not enough cortisol and excess of androgen hormone which can lead to life threatening, salt wasting crisis in the new born period and incorrect gender assignment of virtualized females.
Adult onset CAH may results in hirsutism and infertility in females.
The method used is ELISA.
