About This Test
Ammonia (NH₃) is a toxic nitrogenous compound formed primarily from the breakdown of proteins and amino acids by intestinal bacteria and during normal metabolism.
The liver converts ammonia into urea, which is then excreted by the kidneys.
If the liver is damaged or its function is impaired, ammonia accumulates in the blood, which can be toxic to the brain and nervous system.
Increased Levels indicates :
• Cogenital deficiency of Urea cycle enzymes
• Cirrhosis
• Acute fulminant hepatitis
• Reyes syndrome
• Hepatic encephalopathy.

Preparation / Prerequisite
Ammonia is metabolized exclusively in the liver .Toxic build up of ammonia due to disruption of its metabolism produces neurotoxic effects. Elevated serum levels of ammonia indicate some form of liver failure.Increased Levels are seen in Cogenital deficiency of Urea cycle enzymes,Cirrhosis,Acute fulminant hepatitis,Reye's syndrome and Hepatic encephalopathy.
Frequently Asked Questions
These tests measure things like blood sugar, liver function, kidney function, cholesterol, electrolytes and Ammonia.
Fasting is not required for Ammonia.
Mon-Sat, sample before 4pm, report same day and sunday reports, next day.
Yes. We use fully automated machines that ensure accurate and consistent results.
Blood ammonia testing helps detect early health problems by measuring ammonia levels in the blood.
Elevated ammonia levels may indicate liver dysfunction, hepatic encephalopathy, urea cycle disorders, severe infections, or metabolic disturbances, allowing early diagnosis and timely treatment.

TAT Policy
The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:
- Registration date and time
- Type of scan or test
- Scan time or sample collection time
In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
