About This Test
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein produced by the fetal liver, yolk sac, and gastrointestinal tract during pregnancy.
A small amount of AFP passes from the fetus into the amniotic fluid and then into the mother’s bloodstream, where it can be measured.
The Maternal Serum AFP Test measures this level in the mothers blood to screen for fetal abnormalities, mainly neural tube defects and certain chromosomal conditions.
