About This Test
The 1-hour Glucose Challenge Test (GCT) is a screening test for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). It is routinely done during 24–28 weeks of pregnancy, or earlier if the woman is at high risk. This is a non-fasting screening test. Blood glucose / sugar is the main energy giving source in your body. It comes from the food you eat and is carried by blood to all the cells to use for its various functions. This is a screening test in which a pregnant woman is given 50 g of glucose drink and a sample is taken after 1 hour. You cannot eat or drink till the sample has been taken. If your test result is normal but your doctor still has a high clinical suspicion of gestational diabetes, you must repeat obstetrical glucose tolerance (GTT) test. In many women, blood sugar returns to normal levels after they have delivered the baby.
