About This Test
FT4 (Free T4) measures the unbound (biologically active) thyroxine hormone in the blood.
FT4 reflects how well the thyroid gland is producing hormones. While TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) is produced by the pituitary gland.
It controls how much T4 and T3 the thyroid makes. TSH is the most sensitive test for detecting thyroid imbalance. Clinically this test help to diagnosis of hypothyroidism & hyperthyroidism, monitoring thyroid medication (thyroxine therapy), evaluation of pituitary gland function, screening during pregnancy, checking fatigue, weight changes, hair fall, menstrual issues, etc.
