Free T4

Also Known As: FT4 Free Thyroxine T4 (Free)
The Free T4 (Free Thyroxine) test measures the level of unbound, biologically active thyroxine circulating in the blood. T4 is the main hormone produced by the thyroid gland and is essential for metabolism regulation, growth and development, heart and muscle function, Temperature control. FT4 is one of the most important tests for evaluating thyroid function. Free T4 is the metabolically active fraction of thyroxine. FT4 along with TSH gives an accurate picture of thyroid status in patients with abnormal thyroid binding globulin (TBG) like in pregnancy and individuals on treatment with estrogens, androgens, phenytoin or salicylates.
