Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein normally produced by the fetal liver, yolk sac, and gastrointestinal tract during development.
After birth, AFP levels fall rapidly and remain very low in healthy adults.
In adults, increased AFP levels may indicate:
Certain cancers (especially liver cancer) , Germ cell tumors (testicular or ovarian), Liver diseases (like hepatitis or cirrhosis)
