Under normal conditions body cavities contain minimum amount of fluid which acts as a lubricant. Excess fluid in body cavities are called effusions such as pleural effusion, peritoneal effusion, synovial effusion etc. High protein content in fluid is labeled as an exudate which is seen in infections / inflammations. Low protein content in fluid is labeled as a transudate which is seen in heart failure, liver cirrhosis etc.
