About This Test
A Ferritin blood test measures the amount of ferritin, a protein that stores iron in the body.
Ferritin reflects the total iron reserves and is the most sensitive and early marker of iron deficiency or iron overload. A low serum ferritin value is thought to be the best laboratory indicator of iron depletion. Serum ferritin is clinically useful in distinguishing between iron-deficiency anemia (serum ferritin levels diminished) and anemia of chronic disease (serum ferritin levels usually normal or elevated). Serum ferritin is a good screening test in separating erythrocyte microcytosis due to iron deficiency (low values) from microcytosis related to thalassemia minor (normal or high values).
Ferritin is an acute phase reactant. A high serum ferritin value is seen in hemochromatosis and other iron-overload states.

TAT Policy
The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:
- Registration date and time
- Type of scan or test
- Scan time or sample collection time
In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
