About This Test
Creatinine is a waste product formed from the normal breakdown of muscle creatine.
It is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and excreted through urine. Because creatinine is produced at a relatively constant rate and cleared almost entirely by the kidneys, its level in the blood is an important indicator of kidney function. This test is done to assess kidney (renal) function, detect acute kidney injury (AKI) or chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is essential for diagnosing CKD stages (1–5) through eGFR calculation, helps in decisions regarding dialysis initiation, drug dosing adjustments, monitoring nephrotoxic drugs.
