About This Test
The Bilirubin blood test measures the amount of bilirubin — a yellow pigment formed by the breakdown of red blood cells
When hemoglobin (from old red blood cells) breaks down, it produces unconjugated (indirect) bilirubin.
The liver processes this bilirubin by binding it to glucuronic acid, forming conjugated (direct) bilirubin, which is water-soluble and excreted in bile.
In Newborns
Temporary rise in bilirubin (physiologic jaundice) is common 2–5 days after birth due to immature liver conjugation.
Very high levels can cause kernicterus (brain damage), so monitoring is critical.
