About This Test
A beta HCG test measures the level of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the blood to confirm pregnancy, detect issues like ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage, and monitor a pregnancys progress. This is more accurate than a home urine test and can be used as early as 10 days after conception.
Serum levels of Beta-HCG increase exponentially between 21-70 days after the start of the last menstrual period (LMP) and can be detected 3-4 weeks after LMP. Levels rapidly reach a peak during first trimester of pregnancy, then decline to a plateau during second and third trimesters
