About This Test
The Urea Blood Test measures the amount of urea present in the blood.
Urea is the major end product of protein and amino acid metabolism, formed in the liver by the urea (ornithine) cycle from ammonia produced during protein breakdown.
It is excreted mainly by the kidneys, and therefore, the blood urea concentration reflects the balance between urea production (hepatic function) and urea excretion (renal function).
This test is commonly used as part of a Renal Function Test (RFT) or Kidney Profile to assess renal function, protein metabolism, and hydration status.
