Triiodothyronine is one of the thyroid hormones present in serum which regulates metabolism. Determination o this hormone is important in the diagnostic differentiation of euthyroid, hyperthyroid and hypothyroid states.
Total T3 (Triiodothyronine) measures the overall amount of the thyroid hormone T3 circulating in the blood — including both Free T3 (unbound, biologically active form) and Bound T3 (attached to transport proteins such as thyroxine-binding globulin – TBG).
T3 is the active form of thyroid hormone and plays a key role in regulating metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, and energy production.
It is mainly produced by conversion of T4 (thyroxine) in tissues such as the liver and kidneys.
