About This Test
The SGOT (AST) blood test measures the level of Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) — an enzyme found in several tissues, especially in the liver, heart, skeletal muscles, kidneys, and brain.
AST helps in amino acid metabolism by catalyzing the conversion of aspartate and α-ketoglutarate to oxaloacetate and glutamate.
When cells of these organs are damaged, AST leaks into the bloodstream — indicating tissue injury, most commonly liver or heart.
The enzyme aspartate aminotransferase is widely distributed in tissue . principally hepatic , cardiac , muscle and kidney
Elevated serum levels are found in disease involving these tissues such as hepato-biliary diseases ( cirrhosis, viral hepatitis ) , myocardial infarction , muscular injury among various other causes . Low values are observed in patients on renal dialysis or with vitamin B12 deficiency.

Yes. We use fully automated machines that ensure accurate and consistent results.
Yes — the SGOT (AST) test can help detect early health problems, but it works best as an early warning marker.
TAT Policy
The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:
- Registration date and time
- Type of scan or test
- Scan time or sample collection time
In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
