About This Test
Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide precursor of the hormone calcitonin, which is normally produced by the C-cells of the thyroid gland.
However, during a systemic bacterial infection or sepsis, many tissues (especially lungs, liver, and intestines) start producing procalcitonin in response to bacterial toxins and inflammatory cytokines.
Hence, Procalcitonin is a biomarker for severe bacterial infections and sepsis.
It helps distinguish bacterial infections from viral or non-infectious inflammatory conditions.
