About This Test
he Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) test measures the level of intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) in the blood.
PTH is a hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands (four small glands located behind the thyroid gland).
It plays a key role in regulating calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D levels in the body. Hyperparathyroidism is most commonly primary and caused by parathyroid adenomas. It can also be secondary in
response to hypocalcemia or hyperphosphatemia. This is most commonly observed in renal osteodystrophy.
Hyperparathyroidism causes hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, hypercalcuria and hyperphosphaturia.
