Liquid based cytology technique
Liquid based cytology technique

This technique is used in our lab for gynaecologic cytology as well as for aspirates from breast, thyroid lesions, fluids (pleural, ascitic, pericardial) sputum and urine.

We are using the surepath technique (FDA approved) that consists of centrifugation and sedimentation through a density gradient.

Advantages of LBC over conventional cytology:

  • Easier transport / storage
  • Improves the transfer of cells from collection device to the microscopic slide
  • Provides uniformity of the cell population and allows identification of malignant cells.
  • Reduces obscuring inflammatory cells, mucus, blood and debris.
  • Highly sensitive for diagnosis of ASC US and LSIL lesions.
  • Ancillary tests (HPV) possible on same sample.
  • Increases sensitivity and specificity of cytological examinations, can be used as a screening as well as a diagnostic modality.

(Bethesda 2014 being applied for reporting of cervical cytology)
